Pipi Gari: The Captain Who Carried a Nation

When I first opened my office at Harbourside, there was this big white book at reception — the history of Steamships Limited. One of PNG’s oldest companies.

Lillian Thomas was on reception and probably saw how often I eyed that book. I “borrowed” it for a week (sorry, Lillian!).

One name kept appearing: Pipi Gari.

Steamships was marking 100 years, and a huge banner of him was in the lobby. The name stuck.

From Elevala, Pipi started as a seaman and became PNG’s first indigenous ship captain. That’s legacy.

They named a ship after him — one that connected places like Samarai, Alotau, Moresby, and the Gulf. Trade. Travel. Trust.

A street bears his name too — Pipi Gari Street. You might drive past it without a second thought. But behind that name is a story of service, of leadership shaped at sea, not handed by title.

Names like his aren’t just on signs — they’re reminders of the quiet giants who moved this country forward.
