The Variarata National Park was opened on 18 October 1973 and this year marks 51 years. Located just out of Port Moresby, the park offers a vibrant array of activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike, making it a unique destination to explore the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the region.

It is a haven for hikers, with several well-marked trails that vary in difficulty and length, providing opportunities for visitors of all fitness levels.

One of the most amazing things about Port Moresby city, whether you are visiting for a day or a week or transiting to another destination, the sunsets or sunrises are stunning. Head to the beach or to the coast and you will see some of the most amazing sunrises or sunsets. Ela Beach would be the perfect spot for sunrises and the waterfront or Harbour city would be perfect for sunsets. Papua New Guinea has a diverse and vibrant culture and there's no better way to see and experience it than during cultural festivals. Cultural festivals are held throughout the year in various towns and cities and each one is different and unique in itself. From traditional dancing and singing to performance of cultural rituals the experiences are varied and different. This image shows the recently concluded Hiri Moale Festival. There's the Mask Festival in East New Britain Province and of course the Kenu and Kundu Festival in Milne Bay Province. "Here's a little hidden fact about this Piaggio P-166 Portofino Pig which is located at the National Museum here in Port Moresby. The plane was actually bought by the National Museum & Art Gallery in 1984 for a planned Aviation Museum. The plans didn't quite work out and believe it or not, it sat at Jacksons Airport for some time until it moved to the Museum then located at Gordons which was then closed in 2014. About a decade ago it was transported to the current location at Waigani. It's a fascinating piece of history just like the plane itself and there are so many facts about it which we will share in due course. But if you want to have a look at this interesting plane, it's located at the National Museum in Waigani."

When it comes to water activities, Papua New Guinea has plenty to offer. From diving and snorkeling to kayaking and swimming, there's something for everyone. This competitive sport has gained popularity in Port Moresby and you can join in on the action by heading to the harbour in the afternoon. Don't worry if you're new to the sport, there are always friendly paddlers willing to let you join in on the fun. The Royal Papua Yacht Club is home to one of the local Va'a clubs, so be sure to reach out to them for more information.
