The early morning drive to work to the Port Moresby Business hub is always a pleasant one. Those cleaning the roads do an excellent job and should be commended for their tireless efforts.
Most of those who work cleaning the streets are mothers residing at settlements and are casually employed under the NCDC community program.
Most of the cleaners have very little formal education.
During the day, the city turns for the worse as litter piles up and it is disappointingly ironic that the arrival to work of the “more educated” turns the city to what once was a clean green fresh environment into a rubbish dump.
Even more disappointing to see its that almost all the traffic lights in this area do not work. Actually, the lights haven’t been working for some time now and it does create a dangerous risk for both the cleaners, pedestrians and motorists alike who commute around these areas on a regular basis. City authorities need to do something about this urgently before an accident happens.
Anyway, the photos below tell a lot more of the work of the cleaners in the very early hours of the morning.
