Young Kumul utility Edwin Ipape has emerged as a likely option for Manly’s current dummy half problem.

With the Sea Eagles’ first choice hooker Manase Fainu currently stood down for disciplinary reasons, Ben Cotton writing in Zero Tackle has mentioned that although the Sea Eagles are eyeing a Knights hooker, the 20-year PNG-born speedster has been impressive at training.

So impressive is his training legendary Manly hooker Max Krilich has told The Daily Telegraph that Ipape has all the tools to be successful in the NRL.

He is a work in progress, like a lot of those young guys coming out of Papua New Guinea at the moment, but under Des’s tutelage I think he will go very well

Despite the wrap, Krilich is cautious in his praise.

It is a big step playing week-in and week-out NRL. Some kids can handle it, and other kids can’t, but he will get the coaching from Des and he won’t be thrown to the wolves.

If there is one thing the 20 year old Kumul has that is so vital for a dummy half, Krilich says it’s his speed.

You are blessed if you have speed,

Ipape is still under trial but his position should become more clearer in the ensuing weeks.
