Prior to the country’s independence in September 1975, the Papua and New Guinea trials was a popular and often brutal sporting fixture. That came to an end in 1974 and by March 1975, months before the country’s independence, the first zone trials were held.
We’ve gone through some of the records to find out just who were the players to “watch out” for as the sport entered a new era. The Zone trials became the basis on which the Papua New Guinea Kumuls team was selected.
There were for Zones: Southern, Northern Coastal, Highlands and Islands.
