The newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Jon Philp, has arrived in the country.

In a message to the public, Commissioner Philp said he “felt extremely privileged to have arrived in PNG as the Australian High Commissioner”.

At a time when the global community is fighting COVID-19 and the country currently under A State of Emergency, the new commissioner said:

“it is a critical time for the #PNGAusPartnership as we work together to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Commissioner further added that his travel was brought forward so that he ” could be here to support my new colleagues and our friends and partners, Australian and Papua New Guinean, as we face this difficult period”.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister earlier announced that those entering the country would be required to self isolate and the Commissioner in compliance with that requirement is currently under self isolation for a period of 14 days since his arrival.

Despite the current unprecedented circumstances, Commissioner Philp said he looked forward to working with PNG, as soon as the situation normalises, and “visiting more of this remarkable country”.

Welcome to Papua New Guinea.
