We have a whole lot of old indoor furniture we have got rid of from time to time. To us, it was simply “rubbish” and of course they were of no use to us. But what we didn’t realize at the time was that these old furniture could be of great use for the outdoors.
We had just done a little facelift for the garden and we thought it would be great to make use of the spare space around by putting some outdoor furniture. Unfortunately, outdoor furniture do not come cheap. Oh they’re greatly quality and we would love to have them but price obviously is the determining factor and it was beyond our budget.
Heading home one arvo, we looked through our basement and found an old couch with the frame still intact but without the cushions. Rather than leaving it there or worse throwing it out with the other unused items, we thought about doing a little bit of DIY on it so that we could use it in the garden area.
We looked up Pinterest (it’s fantastic place for ideas) on how old furniture have been used in the garden and some of the work we saw looked fabulous.
And we got to work with our own unused couch.

What we’ve found about unused furniture is that they’re good for the outdoors – they fit perfectly well. It’s that old tired look of the couch or generally old furniture that makes it fit so perfectly well with the lush green tropical garden environment. You just have to look at it to get an idea of what we’re talking about.
Lessons learnt:
- Don’t throw away old furniture just yet, you’ll be surprised just how useful they’ll be when it comes to undertaking some outdoor projects.
- It’s cheaper to use old furniture. Not to say that new ones aren’t good for your project, they are, but you’d save a lot of money and put existing furniture into good use.
- The aesthetic look of old furniture in a garden setting brings about a very warm surrounding. It looks peaceful, and it does feel peaceful.
