If you’re looking at getting a new makeover on any part of the house, our experience tells us that a complete kitchen makeover is probably the most expensive interior renovation you will make. Obviously, everyone’s kitchen is different but that’s just our experience and we hope the few pointers you see below will act as a guide when you come around to a project of this kind.
Cost
It can be expensive. Why, because planning and detail is important not to mention the time consuming carpentry work that is involved. So for costs, the most important point is to understand that depending on the size of the project, don’t be surprised at the costs you will come across.
Planning
Planning is critical. When we first consulted a kitchen makeover specialist, his initial question was what type of kitchen do you want. If you’re new to kitchen makeovers, you’ll be a little surprised about the question. Isn’t that the whole point of coming to see you? Well, actually, it’s important to have an idea of what you want. What you have is a good starting point and consider what you want in it or how you want it. You can draw lots of inspiration from the internet and Pinterest is one place we typically go to, to get inspiration or generally ideas. But do plan, what is it that you want. Do you want a bigger kitchen, do you have the size for it and so forth. Have a general idea of what you would like to have is pretty much the bottom line at this stage.

From scratch or prefab
Most Papua New Guinean homeowners tend to get a carpenter to do the entire work for them when it comes to renovating the kitchen. That is buying materials and building the cabinets from scratch. It could be cost saving too and everyone has different tastes so whatever the result, you have to ask whether this is what you asked for.
The other option is getting prefab kitchens. These type of kitchens are already premade and it requires delivery and installation. In most cases, what you see is what you get provided that the builder or handyman follows the instructions accordingly.
When it comes to prefab, there are some limitations because everyone’s designated kitchen space is different and might not quite fit the size of the prefab kitchen. But, there’s always flexibility and creativity involved and your carpenter can also advise how best to adjust a prefab kitchen to meet the size of your kitchen space.
From the last time we enquired about prefab kitchens in Port Moresby, the costs ranged from K4,000 to K10,000. These were exclusive of stove, fridge etc.
More than woodwork
Building a kitchen isn’t just about having the wall cabinets and bench. You should be aware that stove, oven fridge must all be taken into consideration. That is, these items and their respective sizes must also be known at the start so a kitchen can be built taking into account the spaces of these items.
