Sydney, 23 November 2015 – About three and a half years ago KTF embarked on one of its biggest projects to date, the construction of a
college in the jungle. The college was set to address the shocking teacher and community health worker shortages in PNG by providing quality training for both teachers and health workers.

On Friday, after three and a half years of overcoming difficult hurdles such as shipping logistics and building in the wet season, KTF has graduated the first 20 teachers with a Diploma of Elementary Teaching.

Patrick Lindsay, Chair of KTF, said: “We are extremely proud. We graduated twenty teachers who will go back to their respective schools more skilled and more equipped, and far better prepared for their important roles in those vital early years of children’s education.”

PNG currently needs 16,000 new elementary teachers to be able to provide universal primary education and have all school-aged children attending school. KTF’s 40-week course is ahead of its time in PNG and has included contributions from world-renowned academics and practitioners in both PNG and Australia. KTF is aiming to train 60 new teachers each year. Applications for next year’s intake
of students will open soon on the KTF website.

IMG-20151120-WA0005The School of Health will also open its doors the middle of next year, accepting 20 Community Health Worker students into the two-year course. PNG urgently needs tens of thousands health workers to be based in rural areas in order to improve a range of health statistics including child and maternal mortality rates and the prevalence of tuberculosis, malaria, HIV and other infectious diseases. KTF’s
aim is to have a resourced aid post located within reasonable walking distance from a neighbouring village with a qualified health worker.

KTF is currently looking to employ a Teacher Trainer to teach the Diploma of Elementary course at Kokoda College next year. To view the job description, selection criteria and to apply, please visit:
