As many Papua New Guineans in the urban centres use more of the internet, those with an enterprising spirit are venturing onto online businesses. It’s great to see an interest in users using the internet as a way of selling their wares.
Many are using the social media platforms to create noise for their business while others are starting to go a step further an open e-commerce stores.
One of the hurdles with many of these small business owners is the hiring of workers to do certain tasks they cannot do themselves. Whether it be article writing, taking photographs or graphic design many small business owners are faced with the difficulty of hiring professionals due to costs. Many of these owners only look locally and as you can expect, most costs in Papua New Guinea are high. Professional service costs are normally beyond their budget.
We wanted to introduce to you Upwork because we think this fantastic platform might just be the tool to save you time and money.
What is Upwork
According to Wikipedia, Upwork is a global freelancing platform where businesses and independent professionals connect and collaborate remotely. It is based out of Mountain View and San Francisco, California.
Upwork has nine million registered freelancers and four million registered clients. Three million jobs are posted annually, worth a total of $1 billion USD, making it the world’s largest freelancer marketplace.
Upwork allows clients to interview, hire and work with freelancers and agencies through the company’s platform. The platform now includes a real-time chat platform aimed at reducing the time it takes to find and hire freelancers.
Upwork collects 10 percent of the payment to the independent professional—no fee is charged to those offering jobs. Payments can be made using credit cards, PayPal, or bank transfer. Payments are made through Upwork’s escrow system, which transfers the funds to freelancers after a 6-day period.
Why use Upwork
The biggest benefit in using Upwork is the wide range of talented freelancers who can just about do anything. This wide talent pool means that the market is highly competitive. And as you know, high competition usually results in low costs.
While many Papua New Guineans may consider that money is going out of the country, the bottom line for many small business owners is to become profitable.
Have we used Freelancer?
Of course we have. That’s not to say we don’t use local talent because we do. But like any business, we consider the costs, the talent, the turnaround time and other factors before we go ahead.
It’s amazing how you post a job offer on Upwork and there’s a huge number of applicants to consider. Even better, you’re bound to get applicants offering much lower fees to do the job.
If you can’t hire workers to work for you permanently, perhaps consider using Upwork or other similar sites to do the tasks you can’t do whether it’s because you don’t have the skills or you don’t have the time.
