Did you know that Saturday banking was once a common practice in Port Moresby? During the late 1970s and early 1980s, it provided an essential service—particularly for rural farmers who spent their weekdays at the markets and workers unable to leave their jobs during standard business hours.
For many, including small business owners and transport operators, Saturdays were the ideal time to manage their banking needs. It was a lifeline for those with demanding weekday schedules.
Over time, Saturday banking gradually disappeared. One contributing factor was the preference of local banking staff to return to their villages for the weekends. More recently, advancements in digital banking, including mobile and online services, made five-day banking seem sufficient.
However, CreditBank PNG—a leader in digital banking—is now reintroducing Saturday banking. While it may seem counterintuitive for a bank focused on digital services, this move recognizes that banking is not a one-size-fits-all service.
One significant advantage of Saturday banking, particularly from a predominantly digital bank, is the opportunity for face-to-face interactions with banking staff.
