Walking down Cuthbertson Street in Port Moresby is like taking a walk through history. This street not only represents the past, but also resilience, hard work, and achievement. For 46 years, Credit Corporation has been a part of this street, ever since Sir Maori Kiki introduced it to the people of Papua New Guinea. As the buildings along the street have developed, so has the company.
Recently, Credit Corporation reached a significant milestone – obtaining a banking license, as reported by the Post Courier. This is a momentous occasion, as it brings more competition to the country and can potentially lead to growth in various sectors. However, for those who have been following Credit Corporation since its inception, this license holds even more significance. It is a testament to the initial goals set out by Sir Maori Kiki 46 years ago, as stated in the same newspaper.
Credit Corporation’s journey began in 1978 under the leadership of Sir Maori Kiki. Looking back on his opening remarks during the launch of the company, the “Promise”, the progress and achievements made to date are truly admirable. This license is another trophy in the company’s cabinet, but unlike a physical trophy, it brings more opportunities for Papua New Guineans. With more competition, there will be a wider range of products and services for individuals to choose from, which can benefit their businesses and lifestyles.
In his opening remarks in 1978, Sir Maori Kiki outlined six goals for Credit Corporation, which can be summarized as follows:
- To reduce reliance on government and overseas resources
- To introduce competition in the financial sector
- To train Papua New Guineans in executive management roles
- To keep profits within the country
- To provide investment opportunities for Papua New Guineans
- To bring more advanced financial services to the country
There is a saying that a well-written business plan should stand the test of time. It should still hold true even after many years. After 46 years, the words spoken by Sir Maori Kiki are still relevant and Credit Corporation has taken action to fulfill these goals. As the saying goes, “the sky is the limit” and Credit Corporation has proven that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
Congratulations, Credit Corporation, on this achievement. Keep up the great work!
