9 November 2009 I Skerah.com
If you've just got 24 hours in Port Moresby, Skerah has put together an interesting itinerary for you to think about! id is 1.
Get started
If you're usually up early, you can start your day by heading down to Ela Beach to see locals playing volleyball, basketball or watching the young kids playing in the recently built playgrounds near the beach. It's usually a pleasant morning to start off the day.
Craft market
If the Saturday happens to be the second or the last of the month, then there's an opportunity to buy art and craft at either the Ela Beach craft market or the MAT craft market at Waigani. If you're lucky, you can witness a traditional dance group performing at the Ela Beach craft market. Gates usually open around 9am and you can spend an hour or two there.
Quick lunch
Because you've got very little time, you might consider grabbing yourself a bite at the craft market or head to Boroko Foodworld and buy yourself a delicious hot dog. Organised by a charitable organisation called the Cheshire Homes, the sausage sizzle helps the organisation raise funds to assist in the organisation's programme for the disabled. By purchasing a hot dog you also contribute to a worthy cause.
On the hills
Head back to Port Moresby's CBD and then up on the hills of Touaguba to get a panoramic view of Port Moresby's Fairfax harbour, current property developments at Harbour City and the stilt house village of Hanuabada. Make sure you have your camera with you.
Harbour city
Head back down Touaguba hill and onto Harbour City. As the weather is usually hot, you might grab yourself a cold drink or an ice cream from the supermarket. If you prefer to sit down then there's a cafeteria within the supermarket which is usually air-conditioned. You might consider extending your trip (with prior arrangements) by driving across the stilt house Motuan village of Hanuabada and meeting up with locals.
Evening
Where to eat? If you like Chinese then Asia Aromas is one of the best restaurants in town but it's usually pretty busy so you might like to make reservations in advance. Otherwise, Fu Gui restaurant and Grand Palace are worthy alternatives. If you're more into Pizzas or Western cuisine then Ela Beach Brasierrie is our pick.
Just one more
If you feel like having a cold beer to finish of the night or hitting the dance floor then Lamana hotel is the place to be. Live music and nightclub type music, Lamana has a range of entertainment opportunities.
