Sport: Hunters drowned by Dolphins

  • Six rounds into the Queensland Cup, the defending champion Papua New Guinea Hunters are yet to win away from home, going down 20-6 to Redcliffe Dolphins on Saturday in Brisbane.

Redcliffe put the first points on the scoreboard through a penalty goal in the fourth minute, before the Hunters scored their only try of the match five minutes later courtesy of a Wartovo Puara grubber kick that winger Junior Rau pounced on to score.

The Dolphins regrouped and found their composure to score 10 minutes before half-time through second rower Scott Schulte.

With the Hunters in panic mode the home side scored again five minutes later through captain Cameron Cullen, to lead 14- 6 going into the break.

The Dolphins maintained their momentum early in the second-half as Tony Tumusa broke a tackle as he sprinted to the line.

An arm wrestle ensued with both sides failing to capitalise on opportunities as the home side hung on to win.

Hunters coach Michael Marum said he will be hoping his side can maintain their unbeaten home record this season when they host South Logan Magpies in Port Moresby on Sunday.
