Papua New Guinea weightlifter Steven Kukuna Kari proved on Tuesday night at the PNG Power Dome that he is the champion weightlifter in the Pacific as he lifted his way to win Gold in the mens 95kg category.
Kari performing for the first time in these Games received a standing ovation at the commencement of the competition by a very vocal local crowd.
Most notable at the Dome was a large Hanuabada crowd who arrived in droves to support their champion lifter.
Kari had a rather disappointing start to the competition having failed his second attempt to lift 150kgs in the snatch.
But the Hanuabada lad who has proved time and again why he is the champion in the Commonwealth fought back with a lot of courage and might as he lifted 204kgs in his second attempt in the Clean and Jerk.
Kari proved too strong for runner up Aisea Leisola from Samoa who failed to lift 190kgs in his third and final attempt.
Kari’s third attempt at 211kgs failed but his second lift was more than enough to fly the PNG flag for gold.
