The Port Moresby Nature Park has seen some major developments recently to cater for the needs of the 200,000 plus visitors that pass through its gates every year. The facilities include a new modern cafeteria and gift shop, children’s playground, re-developed bird aviary, new toilet facilities which are also wheelchair friendly and now the re-development of the picnic spots.
Tourism Arts and Culture Minister Hon. Tobias Kulang and Tourism Promotion Authority chief executive officer Mr Jerry Agus were both given the privilege to perform the official ground breaking ceremony for the proposed new look picnic spot at the Port Moresby Nature Park.
Minister Kulang was impressed with the amenities and the attractions at the park and only had high praises for the park management and staff. He said it was important for the national government to support such initiatives which are important for tourism development.
Mr Agus said the re-developed picnic spot will not only add value to the park’s existing attractions but will also increase the profile of Port Moresby as a genuine tourism destination for business and tourism visitors alike.
General manager Michele McGeorge said Port Moresby Nature Park recently won the Innovation Award for establishing the sister-zoo partnership program with Zoos Victoria, the first such program in the world where a newly formed facility is drawing on the knowledge, skills and capacities of a long-running, well-developed zoo. This partnership has enabled Port Moresby Nature Park to not only dream big, but also to achieve big, all in the space of a very short time.
