What a game it was between two of Port Moresby Cricket powerhouse cricket teams. IBS Poreporena and Dulux United locked horns for the umpteenth time in the Womens’ cricket grand final and showcased class and determination in a nail biting finish.
What was even more exciting was the support the menfolk gave to this classic encounter as each side battled for supremacy. Husbands, boyfriends and just simply cricket fans from the male gender where there in numbers on the sideline cheering either team. It was a case where women were the center of attention for the right reasons.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, United made a competitive 109 in their allotted 20 overs. The batting display was superb indeed with the batswomen playing on the front foot defensively or even crossing line for the cut shot or the pull.
IBS Poreporena bowlers too were equally classy with their opening pair showcasing pace, swing and turn.
Chasing United’s target, IBS Poreporena looked all set to clinch the title as their powerhouse top order pair, in particular, Mabel Ipi just showed how much strength and experience she has gained in her 20 or so years on the pitch.
With still 5 batswomen yet to come, Poreporena required 4 runs of the last over and if the supporters thought the four runs would be acquired comfortably the climax reached an all time high when it went down to the last ball in which Poreporena needed 1 to draw and 2 runs to win. With so much pressure on, the last ball didn’t quite hit the middle of the bat as the ball rolled to a few meters towards cover only to be picked up and thrown underarm by the United fieldswomen to hit the stumps for a clear run out.
Now, if the run out would have been heavily contested our photographer has the evidence. Here it is:
Both teams showed how sports should be played and despite the heavily contested match and disappointment to the losing team, both sides embraced each other for their performance on the field.
The men outside the field showed tremendous support to the women folk and that too was the highlight of the match.
This particular grand final showed how sports should be played and particularly how men can contribute to empowering women in whatever field women take.
