As work continues on the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium one wonders what the stadium will look like when fully completed.  Thanks to the Pacific Games organisation, we managed to view a couple of the photographs of the final look and it certainly does look impressive.

The new improved stadium has the capacity to hold a crowd of 18,000 which is about 10,000 to 15,000 more than the previous stadium’s capacity.

From the photos below and the current status of the work, it appears that the work will not be completed in time for the Pacific Games in July this year.  Despite this, the organisers have the Pacific Games events like Soccer, Rugby 9’s and 7’s to be held at the new SHMS.

Most of the raintrees around the stadium have been demolished to cater for more parking space and a more open air feel outside of the main stadium.

New additions to the stadium includes corporate box facilities, swimming pool and indoor complex underneath the main stand.

Unlike the main stand, the three outer stands are open air style seats with no roofing.  With the hot Port Moresby sun gleaming from above on a hot day, spectators will need to bring something for shade or face the heat.

Adjacent to the main stand, a swimming pool will also be installed and this is likely to be done well after the Pacific Games.

It was reported last year that the stadium will be home to soccer and weightlifting.  The SP PNG Hunters are also expected to return to Port Moresby from Kokopo and the SHMS will be the venue for the Hunters’ home games next year.

With a stadium that has a capacity of 18,000 and one that looks new, the future of Port Moresby hosting major sporting events looks very promising.  Already, the stadium is set to host the Under 20 Womens World Cup Soccer Tournament and with the PNG Hunters using the stadium as their home ground, SHMS is in for a busy period of events.

The success or profitability of a stadium lies in both sporting and entertainment events and it is up to sporting codes to do their homework and bid for their codes regional and international tournaments to be held here.

Take a look at what the finishing stadium will look like:
