Bank South Pacific (BSP) has been applauded for its support towards the National Aquatic Excellence Program and helping develop young Papua New Guinean swimmers.
The program consists the Kundu Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Target Squads aims to give young swimmers the opportunity to progress further in competitive swimming, build hopes and aspirations to excel and celebrate achievements.
PNG Swimming Inc (PNGSI) President Elizabeth Wells when receiving K80, 000 from BSP for the program said the bank has been a strong supporter, since 2004, and the swimming body is thankful for this continuous support.
“I acknowledge with sincere appreciation the continued support received from BSP for the ongoing education and development of our sport volunteers and athletes and growing the sport in Papua New Guinea,” Ms Wells said.
The program is managed by PNGSI, has been active in developing young swimmers to pursue professional and competitive swimming careers. It is also motivating volunteers to pursue careers as coaches, administrators, and technical officials.
“The most recent example of the success of this program was having 12 female and 20 male athletes qualify to compete in Team PNG at the 2015 Pacific Games receiving 6 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze individual medals and 1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze relay medals,” she added.
BSP’s Senior Business Analyst Nancy Knight when making the donation said, “BSP is proud of its continuing commitment to PNGSI, a commitment that now dates back 13 years, since 2004. It is only natural for us to contribute to the development of young swimmers since this support is aligned with the philosophy of providing health, hope and opportunity for our children and youth.
“There is nothing more rewarding than seeing children-athletes striving for excellence, both at a sporting level, and becoming responsible citizens,” said Ms Knight.
A notable product of the program is PNG’s swimming champion and BSP Brand Ambassador, Ryan Pini, MBE. Pini now supports the program as a mentor and uses his own story to motivate and inspire the young swimmers.
