The Tourism Promotion Authority has released statistics for visitor arrivals for the month of January 2015. Below is a summary of the results as well as a link to download the statistics.
- In January this year, PNG received over 13,000 international visitors to the country, an increase of 8% or 1,000 additional arrivals compared to the same period last year. Holiday, Business, Employment and MICE recorded healthy growth with 13%, 16%, 12% and 9% increase respectively, while VFR dropped in the month by 8% compared to January 2014. Out of the total arrivals, 35% were on business, 37% on employment reasons, while 24% came to the country for holiday including those visiting friends & relatives and the remaining 4% visited the country for other reasons.
- The healthy growth in holiday arrivals to PNG continued from 2014, as a result of more marketing activities carried out by TPA in partnership with the industry players, and to further boost the sector, air and sea fares have been lowered by some major airlines and cruise ship operators as a result of the drop in global fuel price and the eager to travel by tourists to discover new destinations during this time of the year. Papua New Guinea positioned well as an adventure destination in the South Pacific will be the preferred destination for adventure seekers and we expect to see more tourists coming to PNG via air and sea in the months ahead.
- On the other hand, the growth in Business and MICE segments are direct result of the increased business activities in the country on the face of the stable economy, while short-term employment in the mining and construction industries have also improved in January after dropping dramatically in 2014, as big companies are now -investing in alternative industries in line with the demand in the market.
- Key Source Market Performance:
- Holiday arrivals from most of our key source markets performed well in January, except arrivals from the UK and Japan markets dropped in the month. The Japan market was slowly recovering from the Tsunami in March 2011, and the recent strong earthquake and tsunami warning in Japan is likely to impact on the Japanese outbound market in the short-term and expected to improve along the way.
Holiday arrivals by market – Jan 2015/2014
- Arrivals from the Australian market had seen a downward trend in the beginning of last year due to the cancellation of the ‘visa on arrival policy’ and the ‘Black Cat’ incident, but picked up well in the second half of the year and continued through to January this year.
- USA, Canada, NZ, Germany, France and other smaller European markets also performed well in January by recording positive growth compared to the same month last year. The healthy growth from these markets is a result of more marketing and promotional activities carried out by TPA in partnership with its industry partners under the brand ‘A MiLLiON DiFFERENT JOURNEYS’.
- The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority’s continuous effort to promote Papua New Guinea as a desired adventure tourism destination and develop new and the existing tourism products in the country will see more tourists coming to Papua New Guinea and contribute meaningfully to the national economy. Therefore, in order to embrace onto this opportunity, we (Papua New Guineans) must be prepared to welcome tourists and greet them with a smile wherever we meet them in the country.
