The captain of the Papua New Guinea cricket team, Assad Vala, has become the first player from his country to play professionally, after turning out for the Galaxy Gladiators in the opening round of the Hong Kong T20 Blitz.

Playing alongside international stars like Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakarra and New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder, Vala started well with an economical bowling performance and picked up a wicket.

However disaster struck when he went into bat and was run out for nought after facing just one ball, but despite that piece of bad luck, Chief Executive Greg Campbell, says the presence of the Barramundis’ captain in Hong Kong is a great boost for Cricket PNG.
