When planning the company’s strategic plans for the upcoming years, CPL Group Chairman Mahesh Patel emphasized the inclusion of a solid focus on the empowerment of their female employees.

During the International Women’s Day, Patel awarded certificates of achievement to their very first six female employees who have completed 6 months of on-the-job-training to get them prepared to attend the forklift license training with Hastings Deering.   Hardwork indeed bears fruits, as the six female employees are now Class 7 License Holders which makes them qualified to operate forklifts.  CPL Group is one of the very few companies in PNG which is a passionate supporter of advancing women into leadership roles, where they not only have a seat at the table, but even more importantly, a voice.

“Empowerment programs and recognition that invest in female employees pay off in multiple ways,” said Patel. “Not only do they build the capacity of the organization by equipping women employees with the knowledge, tools, and confidence they need to succeed in the workplace, these programs give women the skills to take on leadership roles at home and in their communities. Enabling the success of our women employees will be crucial to our company’s future and expansion plans.”

According to GM for Supply Chain Lee Green who initiated the program: “Supply Chain is a male-dominated occupation.  If you educate a female forklift driver, you get better efficiency.  The wear and tear of the vehicle is less because they handle it with care.  We want these 6 pioneering female forklift drivers to be role models in the company that indeed, hard work pays off and that women employees are equally valued as men at every level of our retail business, from the shop and warehouse to the boardroom.”

As CPL moves toward their 2020 Vision of doubling their business by 2020, the management feels that enabling the economic empowerment of women will undoubtedly be an important contributor to their success.

CPL has a long history of engagement with women empowerment programs –  most popular of which is the Pride of PNG Awards for Women, a flagship initiative aimed at honouring ordinary Papua New Guinean women doing extraordinary things. It’s the country’s first of its kind award system when it was introduced in 2007.
